Siwa oasis of Egypt Landscapes

Egypt’s Western Desert spans huge stretches of sand dunes, 400 km east to west and 600 km north to south.  5 oases make up the only habitable areas.

Siwa oasis, the most western of all is in the north of this desert.  It is just 50 km from the Libyan border and 560 from Cairo.  It spreads itself over 50 km from one end to the other in a depressed area of the desert beside a myriad of salty lakes.  It nevertheless boasts thousands of water wells, springs and cultivated lands.   Olives, olive oil and dates amongst many other fruits and vegetables are locally known to be some of its best staples.[ms-protect-content]

Its peoples belong to the Berber tribes of North Africa, original inhabitants whose territory spread from the Atlantic to the west side of the river Nile.
