Saudi leads MENA’s steel production outperforming all Arab countries with a production of 5.6 million tonne in 2015, according to Al-Riyadh, a well informed local newspaper. Saudi Arabia secured this top ranking despite the various difficulties encountered by its steel factories with allegations of damping and temporary ban on steel exports. Certain austerity measures in dealing with the crisis, included drastic management decisions such as cuts in salaries and annual bonuses together with laying off workers. Egypt took 2nd place with capacity with 5.5 million tonnes and the UAE 3rd with 3 million tonnes.
